Shadow Storyteller
Laura Belevica, the shadow storyteller, is a Latvian architect, photographer and multimedia artist based in Los Angleles, California. She has worked on a large variety of international multi-disciplinary projects focusing on storytelling and creative direction - from print, animation, film and production design in VR to art installations, buildings and large scale urban environments. She studied economics and business administration in Riga, Latvia and earned a Masters of Architecture in the United States.
Nature, color and light are her primary inspirations in all of her work. She has proposed and built gardens on the roofs of office buildings and metro stations (also of her own design) in the middle of bustling Chinese cities and illustrated children’s books about the importance of nature in modern society. In one of such stories a modern family addicted to their digital devices unplugs for a weekend and gets lost in the woods - with un unexpected side-effect of re-connecting with each other.
Shadow Series is an example of simulacrum - an organic metamorphosis, an attempt to play with perception and imagination by finding meaning and endless creative potential in shadows- literally as well as metaphorically. The work highlights the beauty of the mundane, often overlooked natural objects and the power of shadow in human beings. Be it a flower, a dry leaf, a branch or a human being - the subjects are carefully photographed to capture their unique shadows that then serve as the starting point for the artwork that offers alternative interpretations of identity.
Shadow Series is a result of relatively recent obsession - a method of practicing stillness, of being present and connected in a fast pace disconnected world- a matter of creative survival. The first drawing in the series was published on Instagram on February 20, 2018. Ever since the artist has made two new Shadow Series drawings a day. Hence the body of work currently exceeds several thousans drawings -the majority has been published on Instagram @laurabelevica.
